What is a blouse?

A blouse is a loose-fitting upper garment that was historically worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women, and children. Today, it is most often worn by women. The term generally refers to a shirt-like garment that is typically made of lighter fabrics like cotton, silk, or linen.

Blouses can come in a wide variety of styles, including:

  • Button-down blouses: These resemble men's shirts but are often made of softer materials and have a more tailored fit for women.
  • Wrap blouses: These blouses wrap around the body and tie at the waist, creating a flattering silhouette.
  • Peasant blouses: These are typically loose-fitting with elasticated necklines and sleeves.
  • Sleeveless blouses: As the name suggests, these blouses have no sleeves.
  • Off-the-shoulder blouses: These blouses expose the shoulders.

Blouses can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, making them a versatile wardrobe staple. They can be paired with skirts, pants, or jeans for a variety of looks.
